Should I Ask My Officiant To Wear A Particular Outfit?
Asking the officiant about their outfit often doesn't occur to many couples. But it's a good question to ask. As an Ontario wedding officiant, I always talk about what I'll wear near the wedding date when all the florals, color palettes, and decorations are already confirmed. So you can expect we will have a little convo about it around 2-3 weeks before your big day. In the meantime, here is how I decide, well in advance, what I'll be wearing to your wedding.
The venue and kind of wedding you are planning is the first consideration. Is it formal, religious, traditional, or relaxed? Are you getting married inside or outside? What I would wear to a Muskoka church ceremony is completely different from what I would wear to an outdoors Niagara on the Lake wedding. Generally, I avoid patterns, prints, and florals as they can get a little busy. If you have a color palette like white, blush, or blue, I'll match my outfit always confirming with you what I plan to wear. While I love wearing dresses and skirts, I always check the weather, which can be unpredictable in Toronto and all around Ontario. A windy day isn't always the best time to wear that new flowing skirt as beautiful as it is. But if a couple really prefers a dress, I have an epic collection of long dresses and pencil skirts that are safe, even on the windiest days.
Perhaps being an officiant is my excuse to go on shopping sprees. I do have a huge collection of pants in every color imaginable with matching jackets and shirts. Then there are the shoes. These are quite important too. If a couple is quite tall, I might wear heels as helps to be on a similar level for our connection during the ceremony and looks better in the photos.
Sometimes couples see photos of me on my blog performing a ceremony in Toronto or around Ontario and ask if I can wear the same outfit. The answer is yes!
So feel free to discuss my outfit if you wish. Don't be shy to ask or request specific colors or styles and I'll do my best to pull together a lovely fashion look that will complement the gorgeous wedding ceremony setting.
